Day 1

Take the road to Abitibi-Témiscamingue early in the morning until you reach Val-d’Or, where you will begin your journey. Visit the Cité de l’Or and the mining village of Bourlamaque and get into the mining profession. Live the unique experience of a real descent underground, 91 meters into the galleries of the Lamaque mine which is the deepest gold mine in Canada accessible to tourists. Underground, you will learn about current and past methods of extracting gold. On the surface, you will have the privilege to get an introduction to the transformation of gold by visiting the analysis laboratory. After a good dinner at the restaurant, check into your hotel in Val d´Or and possibility of swimming depending on the hotel. Meal included: dinner.

Day 2

After breakfast at the hotel, pack your luggage and head to Malartic. Visit the Abitibi-Témiscamingue Mineralogical Museum and discover the geology of the region through a spectacular multimedia presentation allowing you to appreciate the structure and transformation of the earth’s geological landscape. Learn more about all of the region’s mineral exploration projects, producing and developing mines as well as the properties of minerals. Depending on availability, you will be offered a tour of the facilities at the Canadian Malartic Mine, the largest open-pit gold mine in the country. Afterwards, head to Amos for a visit to Refuge Pageau. During your visit, you will meet the large animals of the Abitibi forests and several species of birds of prey. It will also be an opportunity to hear the story of Michel Pageau and that of the animals of the Refuge. Discover how the contact between man and animal is expressed through the work of Mr. Pageau in a mythical and natural way. Night at the hotel in Rouyn-Noranda. Meals included: breakfast and dinner.

Day 3

After breakfast, head now to Témiscamingue, to the historic T.E Draper site and to Chantier Gédéon. These places will make you relive the life of the loggers of the 1930s and 1940s. This tour will allow you to appreciate our ancestors and the hard work of the forest workers of the time. After this trip into the past, head to Obadjiwan-Fort-Témiscamingue National Historic Site for a Discovery Tour that will introduce you to the world of the fur trade. Return to Rouyn-Noranda at the end of the day for dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Day 4

A trip to Abitibi-Témiscamingue, a land of natural wealth, would not be complete without a day outdoors in one of our national parks. So set sail for Aiguebelle National Park where a host of school programs and diverse activities are offered whatever the season. Parc national D’Aiguebelle is distinguished by various geological phenomena such as giant pots and pillow lava. In addition to wildlife viewing, discover traces of glaciers, lava flows, and 2.7 billion years old rocks. Give students the chance to learn about nature and understand its fragility. Return to Rouyn-Noranda for dinner and overnight. Meals included: breakfast, picnic lunch and dinner.

Day 5

Return to your school after breakfast. Meal included: Breakfast.
